Beauvais



Beauvais, City of Art and History, is a French city located north of Paris, on the left bank of the Thérain, a tributary of the Oise. Administratively, this commune, located in the Picardy region, is the prefecture of the Oise department. Beauvais is also the capital of a canton and the seat of a bishopric. With the largest population in the department, Beauvais is the third most populous commune in the region.

La Cathédrale Saint Pierre



Beauvais Cathedral in France is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture. It is renowned for having no nave—only the first bay was built—and for having the highest Gothic choir in the world (48.50 m).

The church has an astronomical clock (1866) with a sound and light show, and the oldest medieval carillon clock still in working order.

L'Eglise Saint Etienne



The Saint-Étienne church in Beauvais is a half-Romanesque, half-Gothic building. The construction of the Romanesque church dates back to 1120. The nave and façade were completed in the 13th century. Between 1506 and 1556, the choir was modified and modernized in a flamboyant Gothic style, which was quickly embellished with stained-glass windows made by the best master glassmakers in the region.

The Beauvais factory was founded in 1664 by Jean-Baptiste Colbert. The Beauvais weavings were of exceptional quality, almost on par with those of the Gobelins.
